WHAT ARE MY ASSIGNMENT AND EXAM RIGHTS?

Assignment rights

As a student, you have the following rights:

  • A standard unit includes either two or three summative assessment items.
  • Weightings for each item of assessment must be a whole percent in increments of 5% (eg 45%).
  • The weighting must not be expressed as a range (eg between 30% and 40%).
  • The maximum weighting of an assessment item is 60%.
  • The minimum weighting of an assessment item is 10%.
  • The maximum weighting for the collective component of team work is 50%.

If any of your rights have been interfered with, contact your faculty immediately.

Exam rights

As a student, you have the following rights:

  • You must be given access to the preliminary exam timetable for centrally organised exams at least four weeks prior to the exam period.
  • Exams should be held between 8:00am and 9:00pm on weekdays and 8:00am and 6:00pm on Saturdays. Examinations must not be held on Sundays or public holidays.
  • On any day:
    • You should not be required to undertake more than two exams
    • The total working time should not exceed six hours
    • There should be a minimum break of one and a half hours between your exams.
  • You should not normally be required to undertake exams on more than three days in succession or more than four exams in three successive days.
  • Exams should normally be held on the campus where teaching in the unit concerned was normally conducted.
  • In the case where units are offered on an internal and external basis, the same paper is normally set and the exam will take place simultaneously.
  • Exams other than deferred or supplementary examinations must not be held during holidays or SWOTVAC.

You may be eligible for an alternative exam timetable if your current timetable requires you to take:

  1. Three exams within 24 hours. Examination sessions commence at 8:30am, 1:30pm and 5:30pm. This requirement is to ensure that a student doesn’t sit three examination sessions in a row; or
  2. Exams on more than three days in succession; or
  3. More than four exams in three successive days.

Immediately contact HiQ if your exam rights are in breach. If QUT are unable to change your timetable, then you may be eligible for Special Consideration.
