Change of Major

Can I change my major?

Yes, you just need to be eligible to do so, and make sure you do it at the right time. The way you need to do it depends on what your original QTAC offer was. If you’re an international student, there are separate rules at the bottom.

My major was part of my offer.

For instance, through QTAC you were offered a place in Applied Science (Geology). Geology is your major because it’s in brackets. This means that you were offered a place specifically in that major, and to change your major, you need to get a new offer.

This means you need to apply again through QTAC. You can find a tutorial on how to do this here.

Once you’re in university, you don’t use your OP anymore. Instead, the University will give you a rank based on your current GPA, and that’s what will determine if you have the entry requirements for a course.

While we can’t predict what rank you will get until the University assesses it, you can have a look on the Student Gateway to find out what the range of ranks your eligible for is.

My major wasn’t part of my offer.

For instance, you enrolled into Creative Industries – there were no brackets after your degree. Once you enrol, then you choose what your major is.

To change your major you must be eligible and do it at the right time.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To change your major you must have completed one semester of your course. You may not change your major in your first semester at QUT.

You also need to meet the entry requirements for that course. To find the entry requirements of a course, search it on the QUT website.

The entry requirements for the new major are lower than my current major.

Great! You can transfer easily into your new major. All you need to do is fill out the Application to Change Major (CM) form and hand it in to the Student Centre. You can do this at any stage during the year.

The entry requirements for the new major are higher than my current major.

Because of the higher entry requirements, you need to reapply through QTAC. You can find a tutorial on how to do this here.

You need to speak to your Faculty if you would like to change your major. You need to be very careful about doing this, because your new major may not meet the requirements of your confirmation of enrolment, which may result in your student visa being cancelled.
