Assignments lost by QUT

What do I do if QUT loses my finished assignment?

Unfortunately, sometimes the University loses finished hardcopy assignments. The onus is on you however to keep a copy. Therefore it is in your own interest to keep a photocopy of the assignment as well as a copy digitally.

QUT lost my assignment, but I have a copy.

Contact your Unit Coordinator as soon as possible to explain that you did submit the assignment. If your Unit Coordinator is unavailable then contact your tutor. You must let someone know that you have completed the assignment and that you did hand it in on time. Then you need to arrange a time to hand it in.

Help! I didn’t keep a copy!

Contact your Unit Coordinator as soon as possible to explain that you did submit the assignment. If your Unit Coordinator is unavailable then contact your Course Coordinator. You must let someone know that you have completed the assignment and that you did hand it in on time.

Then you need to collect as much evidence as possible to show that you did complete the assignment. For example, statements from those that saw the completed assignment, rough notes that you may still have, evidence of research etc.

If you can show that you did complete the assignment and it was the University’s fault that it was misplaced then there are a couple of options:

  • Giving you a mark that is the average of the marks attained for the other assessment items in the unit;
  • Resubmitting your assignment;
  • Redoing the assignment;
  • Doing another assessment item with a different due date.

Your Faculty should ask you which you prefer, and where possible, they will accommodate you. If they can’t give you your preferred option, the Unit Coordinator will write to you explaining why it’s not possible.

Where the Faculty cannot substantiate your claims that you did, in fact, hand in the assignment, the Unit Coordinator and Course Coordinator can recommend to the Head of School that a remedy be made available to you. Where they do not do that, or the Head of School disagrees, you can’t access a remedy.

I need some help in my dealings with my Faculty.

If you need help in your negotiations, or you feel as though the outcome of your negotiations are unfair, contact the Guild’s Student Rights Hub and we can help you. We can liaise with your Faculty and try to get you the best outcome.
